You Charmed Me

‘Chivalry is never dead.’

So my friend and I was at the airport the other evening to pick up a friend of ours arriving from Kuala Lumpur. Since we arrived there quite early, I got to wander around in the airport for a bit and eventually, hung out in the lobby to while away the time. Nearby to where I sat, was an Afro-Caribbean family of five--a mother, a set of grandparents, and two kids. At first, smiles were exchanged. And soon enough, conversation started and I was roped into the big warm circle of their family. I’m telling you, these folks were so friendly that I just wanted to hug them and put them in my pocket! The kids, they were so polite and adorable, and the older folks were all smiles and happy. (I wondered if they ate sunshine and rainbows for breakfast.) When we parted ways, the youngest of the brood even opened the door for me, although it was too big and heavy for his small size. Instantly, my heart melted and I fell in love. That simple gesture truly warmed my heart.

Given how few folks seem to be investing in human decency, it was really amazing to see the new generation show good manners. Proves to show that while courtesy may be old-fashioned, it certainly never goes out of fashion.

‘The time is up! Please stop writing and hand your exam papers in.’

Ah, nothing sounded quite like those lovely words uttered by the invigilator. Why? Because they could only mean one thing: the term has now officially come to an end. And soon after I heard that announcement, a great sense of relief washed over me. My walk even felt lighter with each step as I got out of the room. The psychological weight that I’d been carrying on my shoulders for the past six weeks disappeared miraculously. Don’t get me wrong, though. I love every bit of my time being a student, but it’s so hard being one when you’re working full-time at the same time. However, now that the term’s over, it feels sort of strange to have time on my hand, albeit having to work off the clock almost every weekday. And I sort of miss being with my group members--Kelly, Tanima, Diyas and Vildan.

Having said that, the term has ended and so has my time working at this office. Well, not now but soon, anyway. After exactly one year and fifteen days of working as an audit junior, I’ll be starting a new job at a new office. I’ve truly enjoyed my time working at this audit firm (I really have) but the long commute has taken a toll on me since I’ve started going to school again.

I’m not sure how it’ll go–migrating from audit line to a commercial line--but hopefully, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, God willing.

Father: What’s LOL?

Me: Laugh out loud.

Father: Wha--? Really?

Me: Yes, sir.

Father: All the while, I thought that I’d been insulted by my friends when they sent me texts with LOLs in ’em.

Me: Really? Why?

Father: ‘Cause I thought LOL was an abbreviated word for tolol.

My folks and new gen jargon; never the twain shall meet.

*Tolol = Bonehead in Malay
